The need for Agentic Identity: From Butlers to Avatars

1–2 minutes

In the near future, the “personal assistant” evolves into something far more intimate: a private, local agent for every facet of our lives. Think of them as digital butlers—except these butlers don’t just open doors; they talk to one another, negotiate on our behalf, and navigate the world in our stead.

From Agents to Avatars

We likely won’t have just one agent. We’ll have a fleet of them, each tailored to different aspects of our daily existence. These won’t just be tools; they will be repositories of our personal histories and preferences. In time, they’ll transcend the “agent” label to become something closer to the avatars from the movies—true digital alter-egos that embody our intent.

The Trust Architecture

For this ecosystem to work, radical openness and trust are non-negotiable. As our agents interact with other humans and their agents, we need a framework to interpret their positions, requests, and actions.

This requires a new typology of roles in the human economy. Agents must be able to identify themselves and explain their purpose in a verifiable way.

Standardizing the Handshake

While interfaces like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) allow services to distinguish between humans and AI, the “human-as-ultimate-client” principle must remain the bedrock. We need standards that allow for rich, nuanced context in every API call, such as:

  • “My human commanded me to…”
  • “I am performing a background optimization task.”
  • “Verified emergency override.”

Imagine a future where robots.txtOAuth, and Real-Time Bidding (RTB) protocols merge into a single, seamless handshake that occurs every time an API is accessed.

Who Owns the Protocol?

The stakes are too high to let this be dictated by corporations competing for “share of ear.” If “Agentic Identity” is to serve humanity, its communication standards must be maintained by neutral, global bodies like the W3C. We don’t need another walled garden; we need a common language for the autonomous age.
