The first thing you have to keep in mind is that the future is not cookieless. The cookies are here to stay forever and they serve many good purposes, from holding your shopping cart content, to other ways of personalizing your on-site experience.

Only specific overreaching practices that utilized cookies as a vehicle are getting prevented, most prominently, keeping a record of users across the internet from one private location.

Here is a simplified example of various cookies that a typical online advertising application uses:

[table of cookie types]

1st party cookies are such, which only work within one site. Reading and writing has to be performed on the same domain. This is what cookies were designed to do.

  • Functional cookies are needed to deliver the core functionality, like X and Y
  • UUID = Universal User Identifier – every application has a version of this concept, to personalize, or simply to collect reliable statistics.

3rd party cookies were a hack on the internet when we realized there is no technical obstacle to read cookies set on any site. This gave birth to a lot of novel ideas around user tracking, where a whole ecosystem of applications would be calling each other and passing the content of these cookies in the process called “cookie sync”. This is the stuff causing all the heat.
